Around fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Police say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a individual discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Police then found multiple other vandalized cars and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests indicate the liquid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; officials are not yet informed of any harm in association with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking representative stated the incident left him stunned and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, referring to the death of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at people of foreign heritage in 2020.
