TikTok Offers Users Power to Reduce AI-Generated Media in Personal Streams

TikTok is introducing a new feature that permits them to lessen the volume of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the service disclosed that it currently hosts in excess of 1 bn AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a full-scale release. This shift comes amid a increase in AI content, driven by emerging video-generation tools.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that nearly 10% of the fastest-growing video streams on a popular video site only show AI-generated videos. A large amount of this material is considered low-quality AI content, a term for inferior, bulk-generated content that is often illogical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that a lot of users like content created using AI tools, ranging from digital art to informative clips, and we aim to provide users the power to adjust the amount of that, based on their own preferences,” said a spokesperson.

Scale of AI Content

The service disclosed that there are presently 1.3 billion videos on its app tagged as artificially created. In total, in excess of 100 mn videos are uploaded to the app each day, making AI content a limited part of its complete catalog.

User Control Features

Viewers will be able to limit or boost the volume of AI content they view by opening the “manage topic” option in the platform and selecting the AI content topic. Further subjects that are already be controlled under the filter include current affairs, style, cosmetics, and choreography.

Content Labeling and Policies

TikTok’s rules require creators to label “realistic” AI-made content, and it bans dangerous deepfakes of celebrities or critical incidents. Any realistic AI video that is unmarked can be deleted under its terms of service.

In addition, the platform will henceforth attach an AI-generated label to content made using its built-in AI features, or flagged by an collaborative effort for identifying AI-generated material. This measure is intended to deter users from attempting to circumvent the disclosure requirement.

Educational Initiatives

The company is additionally introducing a $2m AI literacy fund for experts and organizations to create learning resources about using AI responsibly. This program will assist non-profit groups dedicated to teaching programming and robotics.

Platform Protection

The video-sharing app has supported its safety measures, amid discussion over proposals to lay off a large number of review team members in the United Kingdom. TikTok is set to eliminate 439 jobs in its trust and safety division in the UK capital, with labor groups and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by machine-led review.

A company official clarified that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by filtering out the most harmful content prior to it gets reviewed by humans. The company reported a significant reduction in disturbing and violent content reviewed by human moderators over the previous year due to intervention by its automated systems.

We believe it is crucial to combine humans and technology to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we also think it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of dangerous material as rapidly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is making a difference operate efficiently.”
